Woodbury exceeded head coach Justin Smith’s expectations at the Rumble on the Red Tournament in North Dakota.
The Royals finished 19th out of 66 teams. Smith said the team hoped for a top 20 finish and it got that with two place-winners at the tournament.
Second-ranked Justin Herold-Plakut went 6-1 at the tournament to finish third and sixth-ranked Ben Donnelly went 5-2 to place fifth. Harold-Plakut advanced to the semifinals against Scott West’s Andrew Fogerty and fell 7-0. Fogerty went on to win the 152-pound weight class.
Herold-Plakut got a 14-1 major decision in wrestlebacks and beat Cambridge-Isanti’s Ty Torgeson 4-3 for third place.
Donnelly won his first match in wrestlebacks and won 4-1 before losing in overtime to Fargo Davies Cole Mehring. Donnelly went on to beat Minot’s Cody Haugen 1-0 for fifth place.
Ty Johnson went 3-2 and Matt Delaney, who won three consecutive matches to reach the quarterfinals, finished 3-2. Howard Jones also went 4-2.
After the Rumble on the Red, Justin Herold-Plakut, ranked second at 152 pounds, scored a championship at 160 pounds Saturday at the Cannon Falls Invitational.
Herold-Plakut held off Hastings’ Dan Marquette, who is ranked eighth at 160 pounds, for a 3-2 victory. Herold-Plakut picked up a 24-7 technical fall victory over Trinity of River Ridge in the first round and earned a 20-8 major decision victory over Cannon Falls’ Derek Johnson to reach the finals.
Hastings’ Jake Anderson edged out Ben Donnelly at 145 pounds for the title with a 5-3 decision. Donnelly had pinned his way to the title match.
Howard Jones also placed second for the Royals after getting pinned by Byron’s Brian Bertram in the third period. Jones defeated Hastings’ Logan Gove 8-3 to open the tournament and pinned Cannon Falls’ Justin Miest in the semifinals.
Ty Johnson finished third at 120 pounds with a 2-1 record. Johnson earned a 10-7 decision over Cannon Falls’ Tyler Wilson to secure third place. Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial’s Louie Sanders knocked Johnson out in the semifinals with a 6-2 decision. Sanders went on to win the weight class.
Matt Delaney finished fourth at 138 pounds after an 11-6 decision loss to Hastings’ Jake Spitzacek. Cannon Falls’ Roman Wundrow had a 17-4 major decision victory over Delaney in the semifinals.
Anthony Doreo placed fourth at 195 pound with a win over Byron’s Nick Douglass. Doreo went on to fall in the semifinals to Kimball’s Austyn Schlueter and Hastings’ Daryale Harris in the third-place match.
Austin Braun finished fifth at 113 pounds after recording a fall over Rochester Century’s Ronnie Lyles in the consolation bracket. Braun got bounced to the consolation bracket after a 13-3 major decision loss to Kimball’s Blane Tschida. Tschida went on to win the weight class with a 9-4 decision over Cannon Falls’ Ryan Epps.
Woodbury’s David Baseman finished sixth at 126 pounds after losing a 9-5 decision to Hastings’ Bill Norris.
