Welcoming the first baby of the year in Woodbury

Though he was due to come screaming into the world on the 28th of December, Jacob James Greengard just wasn’t ready yet.
He wanted to be Woodbury’s first baby of 2013.
Ashley and Jesse Greengard, of Oakdale, welcomed baby Jacob at 1:24 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1. He weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces and measured 20.25 inches long.
Even though Jacob wasn’t ready to come out, the doctors didn’t agree.
When the Greengards went into Woodwinds for a final ultrasound on Dec. 31, Ashley said doctors found he couldn’t maintain his heart rate at a stable, safe level.
So mom and dad went home to pick up their bags and go back to the hospital expecting to deliver that day.
They waited the afternoon to see how things would go.
At some point during the day, Jacob’s heart rate dropped so the doctors remedied the situation with fluids.
It looked like he was doing OK there for a while.
“As soon as I fell asleep, he didn’t tolerate that very well,” Greengard said. “He just wasn’t tolerating being in there any longer.”
It wasn’t until he was delivered in an emergency C-section that his heart rate was finally stable.
Greengard didn’t even get to see him until that afternoon because Jacob was rushed to the special care nursery right after the delivery and stayed there overnight, she said.
Her husband, mother and mother-in-law got to see Jacob right away, but she had to wait until 2 p.m. that afternoon.
“It was worrisome,” Greengard said, but added that everyone assured her everything was fine.
All of Jacob’s stats and blood results continued to come back good over the next couple of days.
By Jan. 3, doctors were coming into the Greengards’ room reassuring them that the baby’s hemoglobin levels were good to go and he could go home.
“The nurses were great and doctors that were here were fabulous,” Greengard said.
Even though Jacob was sleepy and a little irritated when mom got him out of his crib by Day 3, he was ready to go hang out with his 8-year-old sister Alexis who named him.
“We didn’t really expect it,” Greengard said of the Jan. 1 birthday. “It’ll be a fun story for him. He’ll always have it off.”
