Woodbury girls hockey: Royals bring home hardware from Armstrong tournament

The Woodbury girls hockey team took part in the Armstrong/Cooper All Stars Holiday Tournament and brought home some hardware.

    The Woodbury girls hockey team won the consolation championship at the Armstrong/Cooper All Stars Holiday Tournament, beating Mahtomedi and Totino-Grace after falling to Buffalo in the first round.

The Woodbury girls hockey team took part in the Armstrong/Cooper All Stars Holiday Tournament and brought home some hardware.

The Royals (4-11-1; 1-8-1 Suburban East Conference) fell to 14th-ranked Buffalo 5-1 in the first round, but rebounded with a 3-2 win over Mahtomedi and a 2-1 victory over Totino-Grace in the consolation title game.

In the fifth-place game against Totino-Grace, which is ranked 20th in Class A, Woodbury’s Cassy Morris scored the game-winning goal in overtime on assists by Erin Goodell and Kayla Falconer. In the game, Totino-Grace (8-6-4) scored with 4 minutes, 29 seconds left in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. However, Woodbury’s Lauren Cotroneo tied the game a minute later. The two teams combined for 35 shots in the second and third periods, but didn’t get any past in the net. The Royals outshot the Eagles 32-30 in the game. For Woodbury, Kaelan Geisser made 29 saves for the win.

Woodbury needed another overtime game just to reach the consolation finals. The Royals took down Mahtomedi 3-2 in the consolation semifinal as Sarah Wahlin netted the game-winner 2:29 into the extra period. Wahlin had two goals and an assist in the win over the Zephyrs (4-8-4). Morris had the other goal in the game for Woodbury and Kimberlee Taplin registered an assist.

Following the tournament success, Woodbury returned to Suburban East Conference play and was handed a pair of lopsided losses. Forest Lake (8-6-2; 3-6-1 SEC) beat Woodbury 7-1 on Thursday, Jan. 3 and the Royals fell 5-1 to sixth-ranked Roseville (11-4; 7-2 SEC) on Saturday, Jan. 5. Kayla Falconer scored both goals for the Royals in each loss, while Geisser stopped 41 shots in the loss to Raiders.

Woodbury took on No. 5 Mounds View (15-0-1; 8-0-1 SEC) on Tuesday in Blaine after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Royals play host to Stillwater (9-7-1; 7-3 SEC) on Friday, Jan. 11, at Bielenberg Ice Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
