Woodbury made some noise over the holidays.
The Royals won the title Saturday in the Rotary US Bank Holiday Classic tournament in Rochester with a 93-72 win over Rochester John Marshall, the No. 10 ranked team in Class 3A.
Senior standout Renard Suggs led the way for Woodbury in the title game with 31 points. Fellow senior Robert Claypool added 19 points against John Marshall, while junior Matt Ambriz chipped in 17. Senior Diallo Powell finished with nine points, six rebounds and five rebounds.
Woodbury reached the tournament finals after beating Rochester Lourdes 78-71 in the first round before crushing Rochester Mayo 83-49 in the semifinals.
All 12 Woodbury varsity players recorded points in the semifinal game against Mayo, led by Suggs (18) and Powell (12). Junior Nick Yan added 11 for the Royals and Ambriz scored nine.
Woodbury now has four players averaging at least 10 points per game: Suggs (18.0), Claypool (13.5), Ambriz (12.2) and Mario Franco (10.2). Powell is averaging 9.7 points per game.
After three straight nonconference games, Woodbury (7-2, 1-1 Suburban East Conference) returns to SEC play on Friday, when the Royals play host to Stillwater. The game tips off at 7:15 p.m.
