Last year an upstart Park girls basketball team walked into Woodbury High School and beat the Suburban East Conference and intra-district rival Royals for the first time in four years. This season, however, Woodbury turned the tables on Park, upsetting the ninth-ranked Wolfpack 47-38 on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Woodbury.
The Royals (4-2; 1-1 SEC) held Park to a season-low in scoring, including an 18-point second half. Only senior guard Larissa Lurken, a Division 1 recruit, scored in double figures for the Wolfpack (5-2; 1-1 SEC). The future Kent State University player had a game-high 11 points. Woodbury’s own Division 1 player, Kristina White – a guard who will attend Vermont next fall – led the Royals’ balanced attack with 10 points. In all, eight players scored for Woodbury. Sophomore guard Kayla Bilski added nine points and senior forward Mikaela Hunter scored eight points for the Royals as well.
Woodbury followed up the big win over Park with a bit of a let-down against SEC foe Mounds View on the road on Friday.
Mounds View (5-2; 2-0 SEC) opened up a 36-27 halftime lead on the Royals and held on for the 60-54 win. White led the Royals with 21 points, senior Courtney Schiffler scored 13 points and Bilski chipped in nine points. Mounds View senior guard Katie McDaniels led all scorers with 26 points to go along with six assists.
The Royals rebounded from the loss, however, taking down Staples-Motley 58-53 in a non-conference game the next day at Woodbury High School. Staples-Motley (5-3) is ranked sixth in Class AA. Woodbury plays in Class AAAA.
Woodbury opened up a 35-21 lead on the Cardinals and coasted to victory. White had a game-high 20 points in the win. Also, Schiffler netted 12 points, Hunter scored 11 points and senior guard Marisa Olsen chipped in eight points.
Woodbury played host to Cretin-Derham Hall on Tuesday, before welcoming rival East Ridge to Woodbury High School on Friday. Tip-off is 7:15 p.m.
