One of the biggest wrestling matches of the year – especially in south Washington County – happens this week.
Suburban East Conference and intra-district rivals East Ridge, Park and Woodbury go toe-to-toe for the first time on Thursday, Dec. 13, for the District 833 Championship trophy and – more importantly - bragging rights for the year.
Last season, Park won the District 833 triangular – the third annual - in Cottage Grove, taking down intra-district foes Woodbury 38-33 and East Ridge 61-15. Woodbury also beat East Ridge 63-18 last year.
Three years ago, Park won the first-ever District 833 triangular. Woodbury took home the traveling trophy two seasons ago. But, the Wolfpack took back the big, silver cup last winter.
Last year, in the much-anticipated Park and Woodbury match, the Wolfpack was down 33-19 to the Royals with four matches remaining. However, Park won the final four matches, three by pin, to earn the comeback victory.
With the score 33-32 in favor of Woodbury, Park senior heavyweight Craig Sargent won by pin 16 seconds into the final match to give the Wolfpack the win over the Royals. It was the third straight year the Park and Woodbury dual at the District 833 triangular came down to the heavyweight match.
This year's triangular will feature five state tournament-entrant wrestlers and others who hope to make their first appearance at state this season.
Woodbury is led by its three state-entrant wrestlers Ty Johnson, Ben Donnelly and Justin Herold-Plakut. Donnelly and Herold-Plakut have each been to state three times with each earning all-state one time. They are each currently ranked fourth in their weight classes – Donnelly at 138, Herold-Plakut at 152. Johnson is currently unranked, but defeated the sixth-ranked wrestler in his weight class last week. Cody Linssen anchors the Wolfpack’s lineup. The junior is ranked third at 220 pounds and is 8-0 with seven pins this season. Linssen earned all-state last season taking sixth in the state tournament. East Ridge junior Reid Lyden, who is ranked 10th in Class AAA at 126 pounds, leads the Raptors. He also earned all-state last year, taking sixth place at state.
There are plenty of other wrestlers to watch. A few to keep an eye on include: Woodbury’s Howard Jones at 152 pounds, Park’s Collin LaBrosse at 113 pounds, David Giadyu at 138 pounds and Cory Flaata at 160 pounds, and East Ridge’s MJ Okada at 106 pounds, Jake Trevis at 113 pounds and heavyweight J.C. Hassenauer.
