The Woodbury boys swimming and diving team made some waves in their first meet of the year last week.
The Royals opened their season with a fifth-place finish out of 10 teams at the annual Suburban East Conference Relays meet, held Thursday, Dec. 6 at Stillwater Junior High School.
Woodbury scored 68 points in the meet, where each event is ran as a relay – ahead of sixth-place Forest Lake (56 points), seventh-place Park (42 points), Cretin-Derham Hall (36 points), Roseville (24 points) and White Bear Lake (22 points). Stillwater won the meet with 120 points, just ahead of Mounds View, which placed second with 112 points. East Ridge placed third with 98 points, followed by Hastings in fourth with 88 points.
Woodbury’s top finish came in the 400-yard individual medley relay, where freshman William Ho and Williams Tostenson teamed up with junior Eric Westfall and sophomore Garrett Norsten to take second place with a time of 4:02.67. Only Hastings (4:01.11) touched the wall ahead of the Royals in the event. Woodbury was also third in the 200-yard butterfly relay as Tostenson, Norsten and seniors Nate Henning and David Khazanovich finished in a time of 1:47.18. Hastings (1:43.26) took first.
Woodbury earned fifth place in the 850-yard crescendo relay with a time of 8:31.54. Khazanovich, freshmen Austin Kinzie, Brady Bennett and Mannix Burns made up that team. Mounds View won the event with a time of 7:57.66. Woodbury’s Khazanovich, Henning, junior Eric Fleming and Kinzie placed also took sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.0. Mounds View (1:34.47) won the event. Woodbury was also sixth in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:56.59. Westfall, Ho, Burns and Bennett made up the Royals’ team. East Ridge won the event (3:44.27).
Woodbury took third in the diving competition with 150.30 points. Stillwater was first with 178.30 points.
Woodbury’s first dual meet will be Thursday, Dec. 13 at Stillwater. The Royals also host the Woodbury Invitational next week – on Saturday, Dec. 15 at Woodbury High School. The meet starts at 9 a.m.
