After falling to perennial power Roseville in the season-opener two weeks ago, the East Ridge gymnastics team earned its first win of the year with a 129.225 to 125.125 victory over Hastings in a Suburban East Conference matchup in Hastings.
East Ridge junior Kelly McKenzie led the way for the Raptors in the meet, taking first place in the all-around with a score of 33.5. Her night included first-place finishes on the vault (9.125), the beam (8.5) and in the floor exercise (8.65). East Ridge senior Libby Lawrence took second in the all-around with a score of 32.425, which included a first-place finish on the bars (7.825) and a second-place finish in the floor exercise (8.5). Also, East Ridge freshman Karina Joiner took second in the vault (8.525), sophomore Anne Trollen was second on the bars (7.6) and freshman Kelsey Deverell earned third in the vault (8.5).
“We are making new efforts and changes on all events,” East Ridge head coach Brittany Morris said. “I thought the girls were cleaner on their skills and had some noticeable improvements. We still have a way to go but we are definitely staying motivated.”
Next, East Ridge is at Stillwater on Thursday, Dec. 13. The Ponies are 2-0 on the year scoring 130.625 and 132.325 in their first two meets, respectively.
“They are always a clean and well-scoring team,” Morris said. “We are looking forward to having some girls ease back into competition from injuries and seeing how our minor changes can affect our overall score.”
