Woodbury girls hockey: Royals' offense sputters, fall to 0-3 in Suburban East Conference

Since a 6-0 win over St. Louis Park, Woodbury’s offense has been in a funk.

The Royals girls hockey team has been outscored 17-3 in its last three games, including three Suburban East Conference losses last week – to Roseville, Hastings and Mounds View. In the three games, Woodbury has only amassed a total of 23 shots on goal, while allowing 109 shots on its own net.

Woodbury is now 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the Suburban East.

To start the week, Woodbury fell 5-1 at Roseville. The Raiders, ranked fifth in Class AA, outshot Woodbury 35-6 in the game. Kayla Falconer had the Royals’ lone goal, on an assist by Livia Twohig, to make it a 3-1 game 7:20 into the second period. But, that’s as close as Woodbury would get to Roseville (3-1; 1-1 SEC). Woodbury goalie Kaelan Geisser stopped 30 shots in the loss.

In Woodbury’s next game, at Hastings, the Raiders outshot the Royals 35-17. Hastings (4-0-2; 1-0-1 SEC) opened up a 5-0 lead before the Royals got on the board. It was Falconer once again, this time on an assist from Amanda McAlpine. Woodbury goalie Maureen Oien made 30 saves in the defeat.

In the loss to Mounds View, which is ranked ninth in Class AA, Woodbury had only four shots on goal compared 39 by the Mustangs (6-0; 2-0 SEC). Geisser had 35 saves in the loss.

Woodbury took on 13th-ranked Stillwater (2-3-1; 1-1 SEC) on Tuesday, after the Bulletin went to press. Next, the Royals travel to White Bear Lake to face off with the eighth-ranked Bears (2-2-1; 0-1-1 SEC)on Saturday, Dec. 8. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
