The Woodbury girls hockey team started the 2012 season with a 5-1 loss at Apple Valley last week.

After a scoreless first period, the Royals (0-1) allowed three second-period goals and two third-period goals to the Eagles in the season-opening loss.

Woodbury goalie Kaelan Geisser stopped 33 of Apple Valley’s 38 shots in the non-conference game.

After Apple Valley (1-0) got on the board first, with a goal 6 minutes, 32 seconds into the second period, Woodbury’s Amanda McAlpine re-tied the game with a goal assisted by Livia Twohig and Kayla Falconer with 6:18 remaining in the second period.

However, that’s when Apple Valley opened the floodgates.

The Eagles scored back-to-back goals three minutes apart to end the second period ahead 3-1. Then, the Eagles put two more goals on the board in the third period – at the 2:26 and 9:34 marks – to run away with the win.

Next, Woodbury faces off with St. Louis Park on Thursday at Bielenberg Ice Arena in another non-conference game.
