Woodbury girls swimming & diving: Royals down Forest Lake Rangers 95-83

The Woodbury girls swimming and diving team took on the Forest Lake Rangers in a Suburban East Conference dual meet last week, winning 95-83 on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Forest Lake High School.

In Woodbury’s head-to-head meet with Forest Lake, the Royals took first place in 11 of the 12 events and mathematically won the meet with three events remaining.

Woodbury dominated the 200-yard freestyle, going 1-2-3. Ana Sortland took first place with a time of 2 minutes, 3.51 seconds, followed by Mikayla Mayer, who took second in 2:05.97 and Maddie Norsten, who earned third place with a time of 2:13.87.

Individually, Rizzo won both the 100-yard freestyle sprint with a time of 58.70 and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:23.21. Kristina Swanson was just behind Rizzo in the 200 IM with a time of 2:29.72, giving the Royals first and second in the event.

Kelsie Carter also won a pair of events – taking first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.74 and sprinting to a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.46.

Sydney Swanson won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:49.44 and took second place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:07.52.

In the diving competition, senior Lauren Puglisi edged Forest Lake’s Maddi Gemuenden for first place in the diving contest with a score of 182.85. Woodbury’s Megan George and Meghan Miller took third and fourth, respectively.

In relays, Woodbury won the 200-yard free relay as Mayer, Norsten, Sydney Swanson and Carter touched the wall first in a time of 1:48.66. The Royals also won the 200-yard medley relay as Sydney Swanson, Sortland, Rizzo and Kristina Swanson swam to a first-place time of 2:01.38. Also, the Royals’ 400-meter free relay team of Mayer, Rizzo, Sortland and Kristina Swanson won the event in a time of 3:58.97. The Royals also took second in the 400 relay, too, as Maddie Wall, Norsten, Meg Graupmann and Carter swam to a time of 4:07.96.

Swimming in exhibition after clinching the win, Woodbury went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard backstroke as Mayer (1:04.06), Sortland (1:07.83) and Kristina Swanson (1:10.99) touched the wall back-to-back-to-back for the Royals. Woodbury was also second, third and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Jessica Griffin (1:15.61) took second place, Leah Cody (1:17.39) was third and Lizzy LeBow (1:19.10) took fourth.

The Woodbury varsity team is now off until the Section 3AA Championship meet, held Nov. 7, 8 and 9, with the diving contest at Cottage Grove Middle School and the swimming events held at Richfield Middle School.
