After watching one streak come to an end during the regular season, the Royals saw another streak fall in the postseason.
Neither was welcome news for Woodbury.
The Royals’ run of consecutive section final appearances – held since the late 1990s – was felled Saturday, Oct. 13, in a 3-2 loss to Stillwater in the Section 4AA semifinals. The defeat followed an end to the regular season, where the Royals failed to win their 11th-consecutive Suburban East Conference title.
Things looked promising for Woodbury in the opening round of section play, where the team beat Hill-Murray 1-0.
Junior midfielder Madison Gaffney scored the Royals’ lone goal in the win.
The luster was lost, however, in the Royals’ 3-2 loss to Stillwater. Woodbury battled to a 1-1 first-half tie, but could not get on top of the Ponies in the second half. Gaffney and senior midfielder Elizabeth Nelson scored Woodbury’s two goals in the game.
Woodbury, which was ranked sixth in Class AA into its last game, finished the year 12-2-4 overall.
The loss ends the high school soccer careers for 13 players: Nelson, Lisa Huska, Kristina White, Maddie Pechmann, Andrea Lenartz, Hannah Cederstrom, Bailey Lervick, Abby Haslerud, Yemi Ajagbe, Sara Norton, Grace Twohig, Marisa Olsen and Liz Sampson.
