Letter to the editor: Embrace Woodbury spirit and get to know Lillie

As I prepare letters of recommendation for seniors, I think it also appropriate to acknowledge one of our public servants who has earned high marks during his tenure; a state senator who joined us as a neighbor this year, but who invested in our community years prior: Sen. Ted Lillie.

Make no mistake; Ted is a man of character who doesn’t deserve the misguided nicknames coined in other letters. These writers obviously missed Ted’s deep connection with Woodbury prior to his official move. Over the years, before politics sought him, Ted and his wife were involved in, or present at, various social, professional, and charitable functions. Knowing their years of service, countless Woodbury neighbors from across our community courted his family to move south. You see, Ted and Lynn graciously accepted the invitation to live closer, and we should welcome their presence as we do others. Other writers should also note that it’s a tradition for Woodbury citizens to welcome new neighbors regardless of political and cultural differences; so let’s be more responsible and extend a friendly handshake instead of a careless rhetorical slap; it’s only neighborly.

Now, although listing Ted’s contributions as state senator is expected, I wouldn’t be a strong teacher if I didn’t urge you to conduct your own research on Sen. Lillie. Find some credible sources and read about Minnesota’s progress under his watch. On a more personal level, consider opening your door when Ted stops for a visit and give him a proper welcome to Woodbury. Otherwise, email or call him for the straight talk you crave from a leader. He will ask for your input and respond sincerely because he is a neighbor first and a politician thereafter. Believe me, his integrity and intelligence will earn your respect; it may even earn your vote.
