New to this year’s Youth Safety Camp, held July 24-25, was teaching the campers hands-only CPR as part of the city’s Take Heart Woodbury initiative.

Children always get the importance of safety hammered into them, but do they actually listen? Throw in some fun activities and they just might.

The Woodbury Parks and Recreation-sponsored Youth Safety Camp, now in its 19th year, was held July 24-25 at Carver Lake Park.

However, due to rainy conditions on July 24, the Youth Safety Camp had to be moved indoors to the Woodbury Public Safety Building.

During the two-day camp, counselors — made up of police officers, firefighters and recreation specialists — taught campers a variety of different safety tips, but in a fun, interactive way.

Campers were divided up into smaller groups and paired with one firefighter, one police officer and two parks staff members.

The different safety areas that were addressed this year included bike and traffic safety, by riding bikes; fire safety, by interacting with a smoke house; bully prevention, through martial arts demonstrations; hands-only CPR demonstrations; weather safety with WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer; lessons on how to respond during an emergency with the American Red Cross; and mouth guard safety.

Two of the camp’s lessons – water and boat safety – had to be lost this year because of the rainy weather since the lessons were to have taken place in Carver Lake.
