Where duct tape meets art

Last week children went to work creating art projects with not the traditional art supplies, but duct tape.

Woodbury Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with Abrakadoodle, offered the “I Love Duct Tape” camp July 9-11 at Ojibway Park.

“Every year we kind of brainstorm what it is that kids like,” said camp coordinator Lezlee Hustad of Abrakadoodle. “I usually ask the kids in my neighborhood what they like to do and many of them want to do stuff with duct tape.

“Kids like sticky things, they like colorful things – duct tape is the ultimate thing between sculpture and practicality.”

During “I Love Duct Tape” students were able to make a variety of art projects using different colors of duct tape including: a wall, luggage tags, bowties, hair bows, coin purses, clutches, wallets, roses, bracelets and even “Angry Birds.”

“We try to do projects that people can’t do at home,” Hustad said. “They love the ‘Angry Birds.’”

Hustad said she is hoping to offer “I Love Duct Tape” every summer, but with different projects.

“The kids just have a lot of fun with duct tape,” she said. “I think this camp has a special niche.”
