Woodbury, get ready to rock.
Once again, Woodbury Lakes will kick off its Summer Concert series this week with a kid-friendly band and outdoor games, food and music.
“It’s just a fun way for people in the community to come together and enjoy some live outdoor music,” said Laurie Mordorski, marketing director for Woodbury Lakes.
The third annual Summer Concert Series will run every Wednesday and Thursday for five weeks, at the courtyard of the mall. The series ends Aug. 9.
Okee Dokee Brothers will kick off the series at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, playing music for a young audience.
Later in the evening, at 6:30 p.m., the Irresistibles featuring Mick Sterling will perform for a more mature audience, but still play family-friendly music.
“We kind of go for cover bands, pop bands, jazz bands, a little bit of everything so there is something for everyone,” Mordorski said.
Wednesday mornings will focus on interactive and imaginative play throughout the series, featuring The Toonies, who plan to use puppets.
Thursday evenings, Lakes Tavern and Grill will serve food fresh from the grill.
Mordorski said popular bands usually bring out between 400 to 500 people in past years and the extra activities are usually a way for the kids to stay busy.
“They’re very well attended usually, especially the morning kids’ ones,” she said.
The series will alternate with face painting and a balloon artist on Thursdays as well, she said.
Although the series switches up bands each year, a couple Twin Cities favorites are always invited back to perform.
Tim Mahoney is scheduled to perform July 19, followed by GB Leighton on July 26.
The Summer Concert Series will also feature new artists this year, including Davina and the Vagabonds, who will perform Aug. 2.
“I’ve heard her sing and she’s phenomenal,” Mordorski said.
The outdoor concert series was started after the mall surveyed shoppers and visitors on what they’d like to see as a community event.
It was the No. 1 event they said they wanted to see happen in Woodbury, Mordorski said.
“It just seemed like a perfect fit,” she said. “We have this pretty courtyard that we host the concerts in.”
