It has been 25 years since “the face of Woodbury” died in a tragic car crash.

Woodbury’s first city administrator Jim Lacina was honored last week as the city remembered him on the 25th anniversary of his death.

Woodbury Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens declared the week of June 10 through June 16 Jim Lacina Remembrance Week at last Wednesday’s City Council meeting.

A number of Lacina family members were present at the meeting, including his son, former Vikings player Corbin Lacina.

“It was a passion of my dad’s to see this community develop as it has,” he said, adding, “There is a lot of pride here.”

Those same family members had been waiting for Lacina to arrive at an annual family fishing vacation in Canada when they heard the news of his death.

Woodbury City Administrator Clint Gridley said Lacina was a Minnesota City/County Management Association president in 1987, but his time was cut short when he was hit by a drunk driver in the crash that took his life on June 11.

He emphasized Lacina’s passion for developing the Woodbury community that only consisted of a population of 8,000 when he started.

Lacina was honored for leaving a “legacy that is Woodbury,” Gridley said.
