A new baseball field built especially for children with disabilities finally opened in Woodbury last week.
The Jeff Hanson Woodbury Rotary Club East Metro Miracle Field put a smile on many faces when they celebrated its grand opening Thursday.
Players from Woodbury and surrounding cities, who’ve been traveling more than 40 miles to play, will now be able to enjoy the game close to home.
“I thought it was a big deal last year when we did the groundbreaking,” Woodbury Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens said, “this is a big deal.”
Joy and excitement, as well as a sense of pride and success, filled the field during the event.
The East Metro Miracle Field took years of fundraising — it began right before the downturn in the economy, and continued until it was all finished last year.
The City of Woodbury donated the land, while a total of $230,000 was raised to build the field, according to Rotary members.
The first game of the season will be held Monday, June 18.
