The city of Afton is hoping to address skateboarding head on, but it won’t be Afton Planning Commission doing it.

Afton Planning Commission was tasked by Afton City Council to draft an ordinance to regulate skateboarding and longboarding during its June 4 meeting; however, Planning Commission decided not to move forward with the request.

“I’m going to suggest this is not appropriate for the Planning Commission,” Planning Commission Chairwoman Barb Ronningen said. “It does not fall under land use or planning – it’s really not our job.”

Ronningen suggested that the development of an ordinance relating to skateboarding and longboarding should fall under administrative duties.

“I’m not discounting it as an issue,” she said, “But, it’s not under the purview of the Planning Commission.”

City Council Member Peg Nolz, who acts as liaison during Planning Commission meetings, agreed with Ronningen.

“I think we hosed up,” she said.

However, Commissioner Mark Nelson requested they table the issue, rather than send it directly back to City Council, since it was a directive by City Council.

Ultimately Planning Commission agreed to send the issue back to City Council stating that it is not part of Planning Commission’s duties to draft an ordinance of that nature.
