Candidate's Viewpoint: Family first for Pam CunninghamMy name is Pam Cunningham and I am running for the State House of representatives in District 53A.
My name is Pam Cunningham and I am running for the State House of representatives in District 53A.
I will bring to the legislature three passions: Family, education, and health care. I am the proud mother of four children, and have been involved in my children's education process since my oldest daughter started kindergarten. I am currently serving in my ninth year on the District 622 School Board, and work as a registered nurse.
As a very involved parent, I have seen firsthand the impact that decisions made at the State Legislature have at the local level. I want to become an active participant in that process, and based on my prior experiences I will add a constructive and positive voice to the legislature.
I have lived in the Woodbury area for 27 years with my husband Bruce. It is here where we have chosen to raise our children. Understanding the importance of strong families, I chose to put my family first and my career as a registered nurse second; focusing on raising my family, and supporting my husband as a family practice physician in Woodbury. During that time, I worked part- time nights at Hudson Hospital, in Hudson, Wisconsin.
I first became involved in education as a volunteer in my children's school, and I quickly learned the importance of a strong education system to ensure student success. In addition to my work on the School Board I have served on several school district and state-wide committees including:
• Citizen's Advisory Council on Curriculum
• District 622 Education Foundation: founding member and past chair
• Co-Action Academic ResourcesStudent and new School Board member training
• Tartan Joint Powers Board
• Minnesota State High School League
• Delegate Assembly for the Minnesota School Board Association
Finally, as a registered nurse married to a family practice physician I understand the challenges that lie ahead for Minnesota in the area of healthcare. I currently work as a nursing supervisor for St. Mary's Health Clinics: a non-profit organization that provides free healthcare to people that don’t have health insurance. In May, my husband Bruce and I served as the general chairs of the Carondelet Gala: a black-tie fundraising event with proceeds to provide direct financial support to St. Mary’s Health Clinics.
If elected I will bring these passions with me to the Capitol, and will work very hard for all of the citizens of District 53A. Thank you for your consideration.
