Woodbury softball: Royals split last two regular season games

The Woodbury softball team put a cap on the regular season by splitting a pair of games – falling 8-3 to rival East Ridge in the last Suburban East Conference game of the spring, but rebounding to beat non-conference foe New Richmond (Wis.) 6-2 in the season finale.
Against East Ridge, the Raptors took a 2-0 first-inning lead, but Woodbury struck back with three runs in the fifth inning to go ahead 3-2. However, the Raptors (11-9; 9-9 SEC) scored three runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh inning to blow the game open. It was East Ridge’s fifth-straight win over the Royals. The Raptors lead the all-time series 5-1.
Woodbury outhit East Ridge 12-9 in the game. Jamie Reetz, Ali Jacobsen and Amanda Retica each had two hits in the loss. Jacobsen also had an RBI.
In the win over New Richmond, Woodbury got off to a hot start, scoring three first-inning runs to go ahead 3-0. After New Richmond scored a run in the second inning, the Royals put two more runs on the board in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth inning to go up 6-1 and held on for the victory.
The Royals totaled 13 hits in the win.
Starting pitcher Brooke Pantila gave up only four hits to earn the win from the pitching circle. From the plate, Josie Ryan, Alex Benedict, Pantila and Maddie Yochum each had two hits apiece for the Royals. Benedict and Ryan each had one RBI and Retica and Reetz each had a run scored.
Woodbury was at South St. Paul on Monday to begin the section playoffs after the Bulletin went to print.
