Woodbury High School will be time traveling back to the era of disco, bell bottoms and afros during its annual cabaret performance.

This year’s cabaret, which is a song and dance concert performed by all WHS choirs, is called “That ‘Other’ 70s Show” and will celebrate everything from the 1970s.

The WHS cabaret performances are May 22-24.

“I took a look at things we’ve done and things we haven’t done,” WHS choirs director Daryl Timmer said. “(The 1970s) is a great decade of music because there were so many different highlights and styles that were popular.”

Some of the 1970s favorites that the WHS choirs will bring to the stage during this year’s cabaret show are: “Listen to the Music,” “YMCA,” “Shake Your Groove Thing,” “We are Family,” “Three Little Birds” and “Still the One.”

Timmer said she tried to pick songs from the various styles of music that were popular during the 1970s such as folk, rock and of course disco.

“There are so many groups that were popular, so to try and get every one of them is hard,” Timmer said. “We couldn’t hit all of them this time.”

The 1970s will not only come alive through song, but also through dance and costume.

As part of the cabaret, WHS students learn choreographed routines to accompany the musical numbers.

Timmer said all of the dances mirror the popular dances of the decade.

“Our choreographers try to make things as authentic as possible,” he said. “Which is great because I like that we’re presenting something that is historically accurate as well.”

Additionally, Timmer is working to find costuming to add to the 1970s vibe.

Timmer said they are hoping to incorporate vests, bell bottoms and disco styles into the costuming.

“Seventies costuming is a little more difficult than some of the other cabarets we’ve done because the clothing is very specific,” he said. “All of those things aren’t always readily available.”

Timmer said he is optimistic about this year’s cabaret show drawing a good crowd.

“It’s a good tradition in Woodbury,” he said. “It shows the multi-faceted talent of the kids – it shows another side of them.”
