Business reach out at Globe University career expo

Globe University held its first East Metro Career Expo Thursday, where a number of employers spoke to students about job possibilities.

Employers from Ameriprise, Target, Wells Fargo, the Army National Guard, Washington County Community Corrections and others were present to answer questions.

Midway through the career fair that lasted all day, a group of Globe students visited the Elements Therapeutic Massage table to learn more about the field.

One student, Jonita Scott-Jiles, will graduate in December and is staying positive about the job market.

“I feel very optimistic about it, I’m trying to get the ball rolling,” she said.

Nancy McNeill, owner of the Elements Therapeutic Massage Eden Prairie location, said the demand for massage therapists is increasing.

“It’s a growing field, we have more demand than we have students,” she said.

She said she encouraged students to explore the different options they will have in the massage therapy industry, especially before graduation.

Another booth that encouraged internships was Washington County Community Corrections.

Adam Johnson spoke about the volunteer and unpaid internship programs at the county that offer students experience or just the opportunity to explore what aspects of the field they’re most attracted to.

“Those things can change, like anything else,” he said.

The Community Corrections department is looking for people to fulfill academic credit and service learning hours, in addition to gaining on-the-job experience, Johnson added.

Others present at the fair offered information on entry level positions at Wells Fargo, Target, and other businesses.

The first annual fair was held as the economy begins improving, Globe University officials said, bringing more than 30 recruiters to the Woodbury campus.
