Afton Planning Commission approved the rezoning of a property, located at 13305 15th Street South, from agricultural preserve to agricultural during its April 2 meeting.
“This is a fairly routine operation,” Planning Commission Chairwoman Barb Ronningen said. “It’s generally not anything that causes any great discussion or contention.”
Afton resident Karen Sotzman applied for the rezoning.
Planning commissioners held a public hearing on the rezoning application at the meeting.
The 80-acre property had previously been used for dairy farming and roughly 65 acres of the property were entered into the city’s agricultural preserve program in the 1950s.
The agricultural preserve program requires that properties be used for agricultural purposes and remain undeveloped.
In 1997 the 65 acres were taken out of the agricultural preserve program, but the rezoning never occurred as it doesn’t automatically happen, Interim City Administrator Ron Moorse said.
The rezoning application now goes before Afton City Council for approval.
