Park sophomore Cody Linssen, East Ridge freshman Reid Lyden and Woodbury sophomore Justin-Herold Plakut each won their quarterfinal matches and advanced to the state wrestling semifinals.
Linssen, who is ranked 10th in Class AAA at 195 pounds worked over Shakopee senior Scott Bode, who was ranked sixth, 14-0 in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 2. Linssen improved to 34-3 on the year. Bode fell to 34-6.
At 106 pounds, Lyden beat unranked Bemidji freshman Brian Mass (32-5) in the quarterfinals with a 11-10 score. Lyden (39-3) scored late in the third period for the victory.
At 132 pounds, Herold-Plakut (33-8)beat Wayzata’s Collin Sohn 4-3. Sohn (23-13), had upset eighth-ranked Lakeville North sophomore Colton Pasvogel 6-2 in overtime in the first round.
The wins move Linssen, Lyden and Justin Herold-Plakut into the semifinals on Saturday, March 3, at 11:15 a.m.
Next, Linssen takes on Roseville junior Trae Story, who is ranked fourth in Class AAA at 195 pounds. Lyden will battle Albert Lea junior Trevor Westerlund, who is ranked No. 1 at 106 pounds. Herold-Plakut takes on St. Michael-Albertville sophomore Mark Voss, who is ranked third at 132 pounds.
A win in the semifinals puts the local wrestlers in the championship match. A loss in the semis would move Linssen, Lyden and JHP into the consolation "wrestleback" round. Third place and fifth place matches start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, with championship matches beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
