East Ridge boys hockey: Raptors fall to Mounds View in finale, earn seventh seed

The East Ridge boys hockey team ended the regular season with a 4-1 loss to Suburban East Conference opponent Mounds View on the road on Thursday, Feb. 16.
The Raptors finished the year 7-16-2 overall and 4-12-2 in the SEC and were dealt the seventh seed in this week’s Section 3AA tournament. On the year, despite having only five seniors on its roster, East Ridge tied a school record for most points earned in conference play with 10 points.
In the finale, after a scoreless first period, East Ridge allowed two second-period goals and an early third-period goal as Mounds View (14-10-1; 13-4-1 SEC)cruised to the home-ice win.
“We were out-hustled and out-muscled,” East Ridge head coach Doug Long said. “They have won six of their last eight conference games and are really playing well going into the playoffs.”
East Ridge junior Jack Greeley tallied the lone Raptors’ goal in the game, on assists by Ian Penvose and Tyler Hart, 10 minutes into the third period. East Ridge senior Andrew McDonough stopped 30 shots in the loss. Greeley and Penvose finished in a tie for the team scoring lead with 18 points apiece. Junior Tyler Fitzsimmons was third with 13 points and junior Ryan Karrow was fourth in scoring with 11 points.
The seventh-seeded Raptors face off with second-seed Apple Valley on Thursday, Feb. 23, at Apple Valley High School. The puck drops at 5 p.m.
East Ridge fell 4-3 to the Eagles (11-11-3) in a non-conference game back on Dec. 1.
