Woodbury boys hockey: Royals end month-long winless streak

The Royals’ month-long winless streak came to an end Saturday in a decisive win over visiting St. Michael-Albertville.

    The Woodbury boys hockey team earned its first win in more than a month last week with a victory over visiting St. Michael-Albertville. The Royals square off this week against Hastings and Stillwater.

Woodbury swatted the monkey off its back last week.

The Royals’ month-long winless streak came to an end Saturday in a decisive win over visiting St. Michael-Albertville.

Woodbury’s win over the non-conference opponent was the first Royals victory in more than a month, when Woodbury beat North St. Paul Dec. 27. Leading up to Saturday’s victory, Woodbury had gone eight games without a win – seven of which were result of either a one-goal loss or a tie.

The Royals’ record now stands at 7-9-4 overall and 2-7-4 in the Suburban East Conference. Woodbury is ninth of the 10 SEC teams with eight points.

Josh Erickson, the Royals senior goaltender, recorded the shutout win against St. Michael-Albertville. He stopped all 28 shots on goal.

Woodbury burst out of the gate Saturday, scoring three goals in the first period – the first of which came from Hayden Shaw at 12:18. Jack Glaeser assisted on the play.

Chase Myers-Beck was the next Royals player to light the lamp against St. Michael-Albertville, when he scored at 13:46 on an unassisted goal.

Glaeser gave the Royals the 3-0 first-period lead at 15:05 when he scored, with assists going to Nate Wareham and Ryan Winter.

After both teams skated to a scoreless second period, the Royals got back on the attack when Joey Lindberg recorded a goal at 1:03 in the third, with an assist from Tanner Antolak. Woodbury’s Geno DeMike made it a 5-0 game and Wareham extended the lead later in period with a goal of his own.

Myers-Beck closed scoring with his second goal of the night.

The Royals lodged 47 shots on goal in the game.

The win came after a 4-1 road loss to Forest Lake. Wareham scored Woodbury’s lone goal in the game; he was assisted on the first-period goal by Glaeser and Winter.

Woodbury now enters the home stretch of regular season play, beginning with a road game Thursday against Hastings (6-6-1 SEC). The Royals close out the week Saturday against Stillwater at home.

Woodbury’s final three regular season games of the year are against Mounds View, Roseville and Park.
