The Woodbury wrestling team took on North St. Paul and Stillwater in a triangular on Thursday, Jan. 26, and came away with a split.
Woodbury beat North St. Paul 57-9 after falling 37-33 in a close dual with Suburban East Conference foe Stillwater.
After the triangular, Woodbury took sixth place at its tournament at Bloomington Kennedy. The Royals lost 53-16 to ninth-ranked Prior Lake to start the day, then downed Minnetonka 51-24 before falling to Irondale 39-36 in a close fifth-place match.
On the week, Woodbury sophomore Howard Jones continued his streak of impressive wrestling, improving to 26-6 on the year. Also, Woodbury freshman Ty Johnson went 5-0 in his five duals last week to raise his record to 22-7. Also, according to Woodbury head coach Justin Smith, newcomers Josh McClain, Tucker Benjamin and Chandler Ignaszewski all “took huge strides” over the week and picked up “nice wins.”
Next, Woodbury will be at SEC power White Bear Lake on Thursday, Feb. 2. The Bears are currently ranked ninth in Class AAA.
