The Royals saw championships from two of its top wrestlers at Saturday’s tournament at Henry Sibley High School.

Sophomore Howard Jones, who wrestles at 160 pounds for the Royals, and freshman Ben Donnelly, a 145 pounder, both won their weight classes at the tournament.

Jones, who won with pins in each of his bouts, was named tournament MVP.

Woodbury coach Justin Smith said Jones – whose record now stands at 22-6 – now stands among Woodbury’s top wrestlers.

“That’s not something to take too lightly,” he said, noting that he wrestles among 2011 state entrants Justin Herold-Plakut and the 21-4 Donnelly. “That’s a pretty big feat.”

Herold-Plakut, a sophomore took second in the 132-pound class. His record stands at 19-7 this year. Smith noted that he intentionally scheduled harder meets this year so wrestlers could face tougher competiton.

“We didn’t go to any cupcake tournaments,” Smith said.

Connor Herrald, a senior 170 pounder, also wrestled to a second-place finish at the tournament.

Wrestlers Ty Johnson, Matt Delaney and David Beseman all finished third in their classes at Henry Sibley.

The Royals finished fifth of eight teams at the meet. Henry Sibley took first; Park took second.

Woodbury, whose team record stands at 2-4, returns to the mats this week in a three-way home tournament against Stillwater and North St. Paul set for Thursday. The Royals compete Saturday at the Bloomington Kennedy tournament.
