It was a morning of sandwich-making on Saturday at East Ridge High School.

East Ridge’s National Honor Society came together Jan. 14 to make 300 sandwiches to be distributed to homeless shelters across the metro area by the Twin Cities-based organization 363 Days.

Roughly 30 students spent two hours making the sandwiches on Saturday.

The sandwiches will be delivered to the United Equity Group in Oakdale, which is a drop off spot for 363 Days to pick up the food.

The event was organized by NHS member Stephanie McKeen who had previously participated in a similar event at a family friend’s house.

“You basically host a party and you make sandwiches,” she said.

McKeen said she thought participating in a 363 Days event would be a perfect fit for NHS since it would help its members gain community service hours.

“It’s a good way to get hours,” she said. “It’s fun, so it’s not something you’ll dread doing – it’s very quick, also.”

To help with the event, NHS acquired donations of bread, bologna and cheese from the Woodbury Sam’s Club.

McKeen said she is hoping to host a 363 Days event three times per year – fall, winter and spring.

Additionally, McKeen is hopeful the event can become an annual tradition for NHS.

“It’s a good way to help the community,” she said.
