Sports Year in Review 2011: An emotional year

Sporting events sometimes can transcend the playing field and can unite communities.

In 2011, friends and family members shed tears of joy, of sadness, and of heartbreak.

Over the past year, historic sporting events were won and lost, new leaders were welcomed, high schoolers became college students and moved on – and some said goodbye far too soon.

For many of the area’s sports faithful, 2011 will not soon be forgotten. For a select few, moments from the past 365 days will last an entire lifetime.

Here’s a look back at some of the most notable events in area sports from 2011.
