Gateway Corridor project awarded $2 million in grant funding

A major transportation project that could involve high-speed transit options running through Woodbury received a monetary shot in the arm today.

The Counties Transit Improvement Board announced Wednesday that the Gateway Corridor project received $2.1 million in grant funding. The funding is slated to go toward development of an environmental impact statement.

Members of the Gateway Corridor Commission have been studying numerous transit options as they look to solve projected traffic congestion problems along Interstate 94 between the Twin Cities and Eau Claire, Wis. High-speed buses and rail are among the options being considered.

The group is expected to decide on an option in 2012.

Wednesday’s funding award was part of $150 million in grants dispersed by the CTIB. The largest of the grants, about $98 million, was handed to the Central Corridor light-rail project.
