Woodbury girls swimming and diving: Royals sink Cretin-Derham Hall 107-97; Bonfig places first at Hopkins Invitaional

The Woodbury Royals girls swimming and diving team played host to Suburban East Conference opponent Cretin-Derham Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 25, and defeated the Raiders 107-97.
In all, Woodbury took first place in eight of the 12 events in the meet.
Woodbury’s Mikayla Mayer, Kasey Bosch, Mara Miller and Kristina Swanson placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a combined time of 1:57.95. Swanson and Miller also helped Woodbury sweep the 200-yard freestyle relay along with teammates Ana Sortland and Megan Graupmann in a final combined time of 1:44.70.
For Woodbury, Sortland took first place in the 200-yard IM, finishing at 2:23.26. In the 50-yard freestyle event, Mayer finished in first place at a time of 25.64.
Miller took first place in the 100-yard butterfly event, ending with a time of 1:04.72. Mayer’s final time of 55.72 earned her first place in the 100 -ard freestyle event and in the 100-yard breaststroke event, Kasey Bosh and Sortland tied for first place with their time of 1.10.91.
In 1-meter diving, senior Emily Bonfig finished in first with a score of 255.70. She was followed in the event by sophomore Lauren Puglisi’s 216.25 score for second place and junior Margaret Biebel’s third place ranking with her final score of 155.65.
Woodbury’s Sheri Li placed second in the 200-yard freestyle event with her time of 2:03.88. She was just behind Cretin-Derham Hall’s Nicole Hutchins whose final time of 2:00.06 earned her first place. Li also came in second place in the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 1:06.09, finishing behind Jenna Hall, who took first place for Cretin-Derham Hall.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Marina Rizzo’s final time of 5:38.91 placed her at second and Cretin-Derham Hall’s Nicole Hutchins took first place with her time of 5:26.23.
Bonfig, Puglisi, Megan George, Margaret Bieble, Abby Kieschke and Meghan Miller traveled to Minnetonka on Saturday morning to compete in the Hopkins High School Diving Invitational.
Bonfig’s impressive 443.05 final score earned her first place in the tournament and she was also awarded a plaque for earning the highest judging scores on a dive. East Ridge’s Jenna Karrow, the defending Class AA diving state champion, placed second with a score of 430.85 and Edina’s Yasmeen Almong placed third at 406.05. Puglisi finished the tournament in fifth place with her final cumulative score of 350.05.
Up next for the Woodbury swim and dive team are the JV Conference Championships, which will take place on Saturday, November 5.
Following the JV meet, Woodbury will look to defend its Section 3AA championship. The Section 3AA championship meet will take place on Nov. 9 and 11, at Richfield Middle School with diving being held at Cottage Grove Middle School on Nov. 10.
