East Ridge almost pulled off a huge upset last week.

Suburban East Conference powerhouse Stillwater finished first and third in the meet’s final event – the 400-yard freestyle relay – to edge upstart East Ridge 93-85. The win clinched at least a share of the SEC championship for the Ponies. Stillwater has now won six-straight SEC titles and improved to 63-0 in dual meets over the past six years.

With a two-point lead into the final event, Stillwater finished first and third in the 400-yard free relay to outscore East Ridge 10-4 and escape the Stillwater Junior High School pool with the win.

In the meet, Stillwater won eight of the 12 events.

East Ridge won one of the meet’s three relays – the 200 freestyle relay – with a time of 1:46.17.

For the Raptors, Rachel Treadway and Melanie Rabino won individual events against the Ponies.

Treadway, a senior, won the 100-yard breaststroke handily with a time of 1:14.88. Stillwater’s Mary Knaak was second with a time of 1:16.17. Rabino, also a senior, won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:27.58, to best Stillwater’s Abby Kunze, who had a 5:33.79 time.

Also, East Ridge junior Jenna Karrow won the diving competition with a score of 247.10, topping Stillwater’s Anna Percival, who had a score of 192.85 to take second place.

East Ridge traveled to White Bear Lake to take on the Bears in the regular-season finale on Tuesday, Oct. 25, after the Bulletin went to press.

Next, the Section 3AA championship meet will take place on Nov. 9 and 11, at Richfield Middle School with diving being held at Cottage Grove Middle School on Nov. 10.
