Woodbury girls swimming: Royals take down Rangers, then finish second in Section 3AA True Team meet

The Woodbury girls swimming and diving team took down Suburban East Conference opponent Forest Lake on Thursday, Oct. 13, before earning second place in the Section 3AA True Team meet on Saturday, Oct. 15, in Rosemount.

Against Forest Lake, Woodbury mathematically clinched the meet with three events remaining – after taking first place and third place in the 200-yard freestyle relay – en route to the 97-81 win.

In all, Woodbury had first-place finishes in all 12 events of the meet.

The Royals had one 1-2-3 finish in the meet – in the 100-yard freestyle, as Kelsie Carter, Kristina Swanson, Addie Nelson finished first, second and third, with times of 57.24, 57.50 and 1:02.56, respectively. The event garnered 13 points for Woodbury alone.

Woodbury won each relay event in the meet. The Royals 200-yard medley relay team of Mikayla Mayer, Kasey Bosch, Marina Rizzo and Kristina Swanson won the event with a time of 1:58.95. The 200-yard freestyle relay of Woodbury’s Nelson, Carter, Megan Graupmann and Ana Sortland won with a time of 1:49.18 and the 400-yard freestyle relay of Graupmann, Carter, Sortland and Sheri Li won the event with a time of 3:55.19.

Individually, in addition to helping the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay win their races, Graupmann took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:09.63. Rizzo touched the wall first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:22.51, just ahead of Swanson’s time of 2:26.99, which was good for second place. In the 50-yard freestyle, Sortland and Li went 1-2, respectively, with times of 26.46 and 26.79 and Mayer and Rizzo took first and second in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 1:02.49 and 1:04.91, respectively. Li earned a first-place finish of her own in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:35.62, while Mayer had the fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke with a 1:05.72 and Bosch touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:10.33 time.

Additionally, Woodbury senior Emily Bonfig won the diving competition with a score of 256.55, topping Forest Lake’s Allie Bay, who was second with 217.75 points. The Royals’ Lauren Puglisi took third with 212.25 points.

In the Section 3AA True Team meet, Woodbury scored 985.5 total points to finish in second place in the six-team meet behind first-place Rosemount (1,034 points).

The Royals’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Swanson, Graupmann, Mara Miller and Mayer, finished first with a time of 1:43.86 – topping Rosemount’s 1:43.94 time – and Woodbury’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Li, Swanson, Rizzo and Mayer finished in first place with a time of 3:47.11, again edging Rosemount (3:47.26).

Individually, Mayer, a junior, took first place in two events at the meet as well – in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.90 and in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.12. Bosch, a senior, also touched the wall first – in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.97.

Additionally, Puglisi, a junior, took second place in the diving contest with a score of 354.35.

Woodbury took on Park on Tuesday, Oct. 18, after the Bulletin went to press. The Royals’ next meet is on Saturday, Oct. 22, with an invitational meet at the University of St. Thomas.
