Woodbury volleyball: Rival Ponies stop Royals’ win streak at nine

The Woodbury volleyball team had its nine-game win streak ended by Suburban East Conference and section rival Stillwater on Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Stillwater.

It’s true that all good things must come to an end.

The Woodbury volleyball team had its nine-game win streak ended by Suburban East Conference and section rival Stillwater on Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Stillwater.

Woodbury (10-3; 4-1 SEC) took a set off Stillwater, but fell 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 11-25, 26-24) in the match.

Woodbury junior Aby Andualem led the way in the match with a team-high 15 assists to go along with six kills and two aces. Also, junior outside hitter Sara Biermaier had a team-best eight kills, to go along with 10 digs and senior Olivia Wangensteen had nine digs and seven kills. Additionally, Kelsey Schultze had 15 assists and Ericka Johnson had a team-high 13 digs in the loss to the Ponies (8-6; 5-0 SEC).

Following the loss, Woodbury got back on the winning track with a three-set (25-15, 25-16, 25-14) on Thursday at Minneapolis Southwest (10-7)

“It was great to see the team come back and play strong after a tough loss against Stillwater,” Woodbury head coach Linda Crum said. “Everyone got a chance to play and have an impact on the outcome of the game.”

Biermeier and Taylor Waugh each had seven kills in the match, with Wangensteen kicking in five kills. Also, Wangensteen, Chloe Richter and Andualem each had three aces and Andualem had a team-high 15 assists. Additionally, Biermaier had a team-high seven digs, Schultze had a team-best 14 assists and Wangensteen had a team-best two blocks.

Woodbury took on SEC-leader Mounds View (13-1; 5-0 SEC) on Tuesday, Oct. 4, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Royals travel to St. Paul to tip off with Cretin-Derham Hall (14-3; 6-0 SEC) on Thursday, Oct. 6, before taking part in the St. Michael-Albertville Tournament on Friday, Oct. 7.
