Last year, the Woodbury girls soccer team failed to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2001. However, this fall, the Royals are looking for revenge.
Woodbury, the Class AA state champions in 2008, 2006, 2004 and 2003, fell to Stillwater 2-0 in last year’s Section 4AA final, compiling a 15-4-1 overall record.
This year, Woodbury began the season ranked sixth in Class AA, then went out and won early tests with top-ranked Eden Prairie and 11th-ranked East Ridge, but fell to No. 3 Eagan.
After losing leading scorer Emily Moris to graduation, Lauren Nash, Madison Gaffney, Madison Nelson and Emily Erickson will look to help lead the attack, with senior Lauren Caban manning the goal for a second-straight season. Nash, now a senior, and Gaffney, just a sophomore, tied for second in points last season, with Nelson and Erickson, now seniors, not far behind.
Key remaining dates for the Royals in 2011 include: Thursday, Sept. 8, at Park, Thursday, Sept. 22, at home against Stillwater and at Mounds View on Thursday, Oct. 6.
