After a win over intra-district rival Park, the East Ridge girls tennis team has won six straight matches to start the 2011 season.
East Ridge edged Park 5-2 on Thursday, Sept. 1, by taking three of four singles matches and earning two of three doubles matches.
At No. 1 singles, East Ridge junior Maddie Blake won 6-2, 6-0 over Park senior Sarah Luman, while eighth grader Nicole Robinson won 6-4, 6-0 at second singles and eighth grader Natalie Robinson won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. In doubles play, the No. 1 duo of senior Emily Mueller and junior Leah Robinson won 6-3, 6-0 over seniors Andrea Kujz and Nicole Laabs and eighth grader Minh-Tu Van and Oksana Carlier topped seniors Marrissa Walseth and Maggie Oppold 7-6(7-5), 6-0 at third doubles.
“Overall the depth of our team proved to be the difference in this match over an improved Park team,” East Ridge head coach Jon Rydberg said.
Prior to beating the Wolfpack, East Ridge made quick work of non-conference foe St. Paul Central with a 6-1 win on Monday, Aug. 29.
In the win over the Minutemen, East Ridge swept doubles play and went 3-1 in its singles matches. Mueller and Anna Bearrood won 7-5, 6-3 at first doubles, while Taylor Anderson and Carter won 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles and Hannah Jacobs and Van won 6-1, 6-2 at third doubles. It was Van’s first career varsity win. In singles play, Maddie Blake won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles, Natalie Robinson 6-3, 6-0 at third singles and Nicole Robinson won 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles.
