If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, the Afton Historical Society may have the solution.
The Afton Historical Society’s Afton Fest returns for its second year.
Afton Fest will be from 3 to 10 p.m. Aug. 20 in Town Square Park and will include live music by Dan Perry and Ice Cream and the Backyard Band, food and a raffle. Admission is $5.
All proceeds from the event will go toward the Afton Historical Museum’s annual operating budget.
“We’re always looking for ways to raise money since we have no state, federal or local money coming in,” said Afton Historical Society president Stan Ross. “It’s all about how we raise money to keep the museum alive.”
Money making for the museum
Afton Fest began last year after one of the Afton Historical Society board members suggested holding an outdoor music event as a way to raise money for the museum.
Last year’s event drew several hundred people and raised $4,000.
“Unfortunately it was a rainy, not-so-nice day so our turnout was not what we hoped,” Ross said. “And we had planned it in such a quick pace.”
Since the Afton Historical Society had more time to plan this year, Ross said they wanted to try and make Afton Fest a bigger event this year.
“We hope like the Fourth of July Parade, it’s something that people look forward to,” Ross said, “and it gets its own momentum.”
Ross said his lofty goal for Afton Fest would be to raise $10,000, which is the museum’s annual operating budget.
Ross said the Afton Historical Society is hoping Afton Fest becomes an annual event.
“We’re excited about getting it going and hopefully seeing lots of people,” he said.
Afton Fest will be Aug. 20 from 3 to 10 p.m. in Town Square Park. Admission is $5.
