Area emergency crews were called to help extinguish a fire Monday afternoon on the roof of a manufacturing building at 3M Cottage Grove Center.
3M officials notified their internal emergency squad of a fire around 3 p.m., said Vickie Batroot, 3M site director. The company then called in Cottage Grove fire crews to assist in extinguishing the fire and assessing it. St. Paul Park fire officials also responded.
It was not immediately known where the fire started, but it was observed in duct work on the roof. There was minimal damage, Batroot said, but a concern about the fire spreading prompted the call for help.
“The potential for it to become a larger incident is real and that’s why we felt it was necessary to get Cottage Grove and later St. Paul Paul (fire crews) as back-up,” she said.
Film and automotive products are manufactured in the building. The fire was associated with the automotive part of the building, but there was “very minimal damage” and no chemicals within the building caught fire, Batroot said.
The building was evacuated immediately. There were no reported injuries.
3M will conduct an internal investigation into the cause of the fire, Batroot said.
