UPDATE: Sunday's house fire under investigation

A vacant Woodbury home was completely destroyed by fire Sunday night.

By: Mike Longaecker, Woodbury Bulletin

A vacant Woodbury home was completely destroyed by fire Sunday night.

The fire, reported by a neighbor at 9:26 p.m., engulfed a residence at 1198 Hillcrest Drive. Woodbury police said the house was a vacant foreclosure that was undergoing renovation work.

Woodbury Public Safety Duty Chief Christopher O'Brien said no one was at the residence at the time of the fire. He said the fire remained under investigation Monday.

No firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze, which O'Brien said lasted about an hour. He said firefighters remained on scene for several more hours while Xcel Energy crews also worked to secure the residence.

Witnesses said flames from the fire could be seen from as far away as 494 and Tamarack Road. O'Brien said the large plume of fire witnesses reported seeing likely was the result of the roof collapsing into the residence.

He said the residence was a total loss. Acting on information that the residence was vacant, firefighters battled the blaze from the outside after arriving to heavy fire at the structure, O'Brien said.

Firefighters from Woodbury, Maplewood and Oakdale responded.

The Bulletin will update this story as more information becomes available.
