The PWER (Park, Woodbury and East Ridge) alpine ski teams competed in a Suburban East Conference meet on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Wild Mountain after taking on Hill-Murray on Thursday, Jan. 13, at Afton Alps.
Individually, East Ridge’s Elizabeth Koprucki had a big week, winning both events, and Matt Stefely won the boys meet against Hill-Murray while earning seventh place overall in the conference meet.
It was Koprucki’s third conference meet-win in a row and fourth first place finish for the season including non-conference meets.
As a team, the East Ridge girls finished strong at both meets, placing second overall in the conference meet after winning the dual with Hill-Murray, with seven skiers in the top 10 places versus the Pioneers. The East Ridge girls team’s second-place finish moved the Raptors closer to Stillwater and Mounds view for conference title. In addition to the girls, the East Ridge boys finished in sixth place at the SEC race with Jack Midtlien and Colton Simon at 22nd and 24th place, overall, respectively.
For Woodbury, the Royals boys team finished in third place overall at the SEC meet with Stefely placing seventh overall, Karl Lund taking 10th place and Davis Johnson with his best finish of the season at 16th place. The Woodbury girls finished in seventh place overall, with Brittany Roth leading the way, taking 25th place overall — her best finish this season. Kaitlyn Cornwell and Lane Crose were top skiers for the Wolfpack girls and boys, respectively.
Against Hill-Murray, the East Ridge boys defeated the Pioneers 28-27 with Midtlien leading the way with a second-place finish.
The East Ridge girls beat Hill-Murray 44-11, with Koprucki leading the way with her first-place win.
The Woodbury boys also defeated the Pioneers 31-24, with Stefely taking the top spot to lead the Royals. The Woodbury girls fell 30-25 as Sarah Niederhofer finished in second place overall for the top Royals’ result.
Hill-Murray topped both the Park boys and girls, 38-17 and 45-10, respectively. The Park boys team’s fastest skier was Kyle Evans, taking third place overall and Cornwell led the Wolfpack girls with a second-place finish.
“We are definitely skiing well now, halfway through the season,” PWER head coach Kevin Seipel said. “Hopefully we can keep improving our results.”
Next, PWER will be racing at the annual Welch Village Invitational on Friday, Jan. 21, one of the largest alpine ski meets in the state. After the Welch invite, the teams then have one more conference meet on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Afton Alps for the SEC championship.
