Four District 834 School Board members — Natasha Fleischman, Natalie Fedie, Scott Papke and George Hoeppner — are hoping to continue their work. All four incumbents are running for re-election. One challenger, Tom Lehmann, is hoping to bring a new voice to the board.

Whoever is elected to the School Board will find themselves focused on the district’s strategic plan, said Tom Nelson, interim superintendent for District 834.

The district will have to be very focused on the strategic plan since it will be the road map for how the district will look, Nelson said.

Some of the areas addressed in the strategic plan include: providing students a safe and personal learning environment, providing excellence in teaching and learning, developing a rigorous and relevant curriculum, developing high expectations and increasing learning expectations and academic achievement.

Additionally, the strategic plan will look at developing new boundaries because of overcrowding, whether to move to a middle school model rather than a junior high model and developing personalized learning.

Lastly, the big issues facing the school board will be money and working within the constraints of funding and remaining fiscally responsible.

“The school board members are planning for the future of the district,” Nelson said. “We’re going to be looking at the future and making some key investments that would make us a better school district.

“What we hear for the most part is that families are happy with the experience their kids are having in the school.”

Voters will choose four of the five candidates for the District 834 School Board on Nov. 2.

District 834 serves a portion of Woodbury. Below are profiles of all five school board candidates.
