Road assessment approved over objection

A local school that opposes its charge for a recent street project said it will have to tap into its student budget to pay for the assessment.

A local school that opposes its charge for a recent street project said it will have to tap into its student budget to pay for the assessment.

The Woodbury City Council approved assessments to the Math and Science Academy and Red Rock Elementary for a pavement rehabilitation project along Radio Drive.

The road was repaired beginning in 2007. Radio Drive is a county road, but the city's participation came with a $3.07 million price tag. Of that, $58,870 was to be assessed to the two schools.

Ken Thielman of Math and Science Academy said the school’s access to and visibility from Radio Drive did not improve as a result of the project. The school is limited in how it can generate revenue to pay its $10,260 assessment, he said.

“This money will come directly out of our students' budget,” he said.

City officials said the charge is consistent with Woodbury’s street repair assessment policy.
