Afton residents will have a fairly easy choice on the Nov. 2 ballot in terms of mayor; currently Afton mayor, Pat Snyder, is running unopposed for re-election to her second term as mayor.

“I believe it is important to continue the progress we have made in the last two years toward managing development in a way that preserves Afton's unique character,” she said.

Snyder said she has no idea why she is unopposed this year.

“I hope it is because the residents of Afton are satisfied with my performance as mayor and want an inclusive, effective administration to continue,” she said.

Over the past two years as mayor, Snyder has helped resolve all of the lawsuits, with a exception of an appeal, that were pending against the city. Additionally, Snyder has helped with the drafting of the 2008 Comprehensive Plan and a wind energy ordinance.

Snyder said she is most proud of being able to renegotiate the Cedar Bluff Development project to better suit the character of Afton.

Additionally, Snyder said she is please with how she and her fellow city council members have put aside their differences to work together.

“The City Council has learned to work together and function in a civil and effective manner,” she said. “Council members differ on many issues but they have learned to work together to resolve their differences.”

Snyder said the biggest issues facing the City Council over the next two years will be completing the 2008 Comprehensive Plan, managing Afton’s budget and the possibility of becoming a charter city.

“I want to balance the desires and needs of all the residents of Afton and manage change in such a way that Afton remains the unique, wonderful place we all enjoy,” she said.
