Sports Notebook for October 6

Woodbury, East Ridge sweep Tuesday's soccer matchups; Raptors, Eagles win volleyball matches.

Tuesday was a crucial night for several of the local athletic squads and nearly all the returns were good for Woodbury and East Ridge, as well as New Life Academy.

WHS Soccer

The Woodbury boys and girls soccer teams traveled to Mounds View for a pair of Suburban East Conference showdowns against the Mustangs and returned home unscathed.

The Royals boys held on to second place in the SEC with a 3-2 victory over their hosts, with the WHS girls maintaining pace for the league lead with a 3-1 triumph.

Ben Cherrey, Eric Miller and Ben Sampson scored for the boys. Individual statistics for the girls team were not currently available.

ERHS Soccer

Like the neighboring Royals, the East Ridge soccer teams also earned a pair of conference triumphs in a doubleheader against Hastings.

Both the Raptor boys and girls prevailed by similar 3-1 scores to set up their respective season finales on Thursday night.

NLA Volleyball

The New Life volleyball team claimed its eighth victory in the past 10 days by means of a four-game win versus West Lutheran, winning 19-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-17.

ERHS Volleyball

The East Ridge volleyball team won its fourth Suburban East Conference match of the season with a three-game sweep of winless Park (25-11, 25-16, 25-9).

WHS Volleyball

A four-game loss to Stillwater was the first SEC match defeat for the Woodbury volleyball team this season as the Royals won the first game 25-17, but then were swept in the next three -- 12-25, 18-25, 24-25 -- to drop into a de-facto second-place tie with Stillwater, one-half match behind Cretin-Derham Hall.
