Sports Notebook for Sept. 8

East Ridge girls and New Life boys soccer teams remain undefeated; Raptors volleyball opens season victoriously.

The post-Labor Day portion of the local athletic schedule got underway on Tuesday evening with a smattering of events for the local squads.

ERHS Girls Soccer

Recently upgraded to the No. 10 slot on the latest state coaches poll for Class AA, the East Ridge girls soccer team improved to 5-0 on the season by means of a 4-1 defeat of Holy Angels in a non-conference matchup at The Raptors' Nest. Individual statistics were not currently available.

The Raptors, 1-0 in Suburban East Conference play, return to league action at Roseville on Thursday night before hosting Mahtomedi -- whom East Ridge defeated in sectional playoffs last season -- on Saturday afternoon.

NLA Boys Soccer

The New Life Academy boys soccer team improved to 2-0 on the year with a 2-1 win versus Providence Academy at the Bielenberg Sports Center. Individual statistics were not currently available.

The Eagles host Metro United on Friday and Southwest Christian on Saturday at Bielenberg.

ERHS Volleyball

Lindsay Ashburn began her turn as East Ridge volleyball head coach with a victory as the Raptors downed visiting Edina in four games (25-12, 20-25, 25-18, 25-21) in The Raptors' Roost.

Individual statistics were not currently available.

With its win in hand, East Ridge is now off until the SEC opener versus Stillwater on Thursday, Sept. 16 at ERHS.

WHS Volleyball

The Woodbury volleyball team fell to 2-2 on the year following a five-game loss (26-24, 22-25, 25-27, 25-22, 9-15) to visiting Bethlehem Academy.

Individual statistics were not currently available.

The Royals travel to Blaine on Saturday.

NLA Volleyball

The New Life Academy volleyball team improved to 3-1 this autumn after a three-game sweep of Randolph (25-14, 25-14, 25-12).

Individual statistics were not currently available.

The Eagles travel to Providence Academy on Thursday night.

ERHS Girls Tennis

The East Ridge girls tennis team fell, 5-2, at Roseville in SEC play.

"Despite the team loss, they continue to narrow the gap with the teams they lost to last year," coach Jon Rydberg said. "We lost to Roseville last year, 7-0."

Raptors' No. 2 singles player Emily Mueller won in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 7-5), as did the ERHS No. 1 doubles team of Nicole and Natalie Robinson (5-7, 6-4, 6-2).

"Emily Mueller turned her match around after losing the first set and beat the same girl she lost to last year in straight sets. She played very smart," Rydberg said. "Nicole and Natalie Robinson had a small hiccup after leading 5-2 in the first set. They ended up losing the first set and going down 3-0 on the second. But they turned it around and finished strong to win the match."

WHS Girls Tennis

The Woodbury girls tennis team remained winless in the SEC after falling 7-0 to Forest Lake. The Royals take on intra-district rival Park on Thursday at the WHS courts.

Results from the New Life Academy girls soccer team's scheduled contest at Brooklyn Center on Tuesday were not currently available.
