Sports Notebook for April 21
Raptors, Royals netters both fall in SEC matchups; Griffins lose at Andover while Dragons top Woodcrest Baptist.
It was a tough day on the courts for the East Ridge and Woodbury boys tennis teams as both squads fell in their respective Suburban East Conference matches. The South Washington County girls lacrosse team also fell in its most recent matchup, while the Math and Science Academy baseball club remained above .500 with its latest victory.
ERHS Boys Tennis
The Raptors dropped to 4-3 on the season after a 5-2 loss to Roseville, gaining its victories at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles.
In singles competition, Vishaal Gupta rallied from a deficit after the first set against Ross Steckler to win the next two and claim a 5-7, 7-6 (7), 10-8 win. In doubles, the ERHS duo of Greg Sharrow/Warren Tropezado also rallied to best Zach Westmeyer/Stephen Ku 5-7, 7-6 (8), 11-9.
East Ridge travels to Oakdale to face Tartan on Wednesday afternoon.
WHS Boys Tennis
The Royals saw a four-match unbeaten string come to an end in a 4-3 loss to Forest Lake.
Woodbury took a prompt 3-0 lead on wins from No. 4 single Jason Lu and Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams of Michael Yan/Matt Shubert and Zack Moore/Jan Groth, respectively. However, the Rangers battled back to claim the next four results to prevail.
Full individual results and scores were not currently available.
The Royals travel to Park on Thursday afternoon.
SWC Girls Lacrosse
The South Washington County girls lacrosse team fell to 1-3 on the year after a 12-6 loss at Andover on Monday night. Individual results were not available.
MSA Baseball
A 9-6 win against Woodcrest Baptist in Fridley improved the Dragons baseballer to 3-1 on the year. Starting pitcher Andy McMichael earned the win as MSA held off a late Woodcrest surge to clinch the three-run victory.
Karl Grant went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Dragons, while McMichael and Corey Hannula each turned in 2-for-4 batting performances.
The Dragons play at Minnesota Transitions on Thursday afternoon.
Wednesday's Matchups
In addition to the East Ridge netters trip to Oakdale at 3:30 p.m., the South Washington County adapted softball team travels to Eagan for a 4:30 p.m. start.
Both district boys lacrosse teams are in action at home on Wednesday night, with Woodbury hosting Roseville at Royals Stadium in a 6 p.m. start, while the East Ridge/Park cooperative takes on Stillwater in the Raptors' Roost at ERHS beginning at 7 p.m.
Results and scores from the Woodbury boys track and field team's scheduled meet at Farmington on Tuesday afternoon were not available.
