– Zelalem Adefris of Woodbury, a senior at Woodbury High School, was awarded a $1,000 college scholarship for her project, “The Perception of HIV/AIDS among Minnesotan Teenagers” as a semifinalist in the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) competition.
– Iowa State University, Ames has recognized the following students from Woodbury for outstanding academic achievement by naming them to the 2009 fall semester Dean's List. Students named to the list must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded course work.
The students are Daniel John Backman, Alexander Mark Baltes, Christina Marie Barnett, Jonathan Michael Bruno, Melissa Sue Carletta, Jonathan David Frost, Brett Joseph Hauser, Daniel Peter Kassan, Olivia N. Kilgore, Amanda Carol Machacek, Amanda Jane Nisleit, Rebekah Lynne Owen, Michael Steven Svendsen, and Christopher T. Wolf.
– Dr. Andrew Calvin has received a 2010 Research Award from the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. He was one of only two clinic residents honored each year with the award, which recognizes excellence in research in the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
Calvin is a graduate of the University of Minnesota. He will complete his three-year internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in June 2010, at which time he will assume a cardiology fellowship at Mayo.
His parents are Don and Peggy Calvin of Woodbury.
