Mao Vang of Woodbury is being honored as an “Emergency Medical Assistance” hero by the Twin Cities Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. The award is presented to a woman or man who, during a crisis, provided medical assistance including CPR and/or first aid to a person in need.
Vang is one of twelve heroes who will be honored during the third annual American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast on May 4 at the Crowne Plaza in Saint Paul.
According to information provided by the Red Cross, experts say the ability to live in the moment and not panic over what could happen is one of the most important factors in handling a crisis. Vang, an employee at Wingspan Life Resources, “proved that she has what it takes to successfully handle a crisis,” when a woman collapsed in the middle of an activity at Wingspan’s Tsev Laus Kaj Siab adult day program.
She immediately initiated CPR, enabling the woman to get enough oxygen to sustain her until emergency medical technicians arrived and brought her to the emergency room. At the hospital, doctors determined that the woman had an underlying heart condition that required a pacemaker.
